Vientiane, Nov 18 (NationPress) The government of Laos is making significant strides in infrastructure development, with a focus on road enhancements and the swift restoration of damaged pathways to improve transportation and tourism, ultimately supporting national socio-economic growth.

At a recent press conference, Vice President of the Laos National Assembly (NA) Sommad Pholsena highlighted the NA's recommendations for the government's socio-economic development plan. He underscored the necessity of expediting infrastructure improvements, urging the government to allocate budget resources for the repair of damaged roads, enhancing public travel and tourism, and enforcing strict regulations against overweight trucks, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

During the 10th ordinary session of the Lao National Assembly's ninth legislature, Lao Minister of Public Works and Transport Leklay Sivilay revealed a plan to prioritize urgent repairs for heavily damaged national highways.

Local authorities are now authorized to choose qualified companies and sign MoUs for surveys, feasibility studies, and design work ahead of construction set to commence in 2026. Several provinces have already initiated early actions by signing these agreements.

Moreover, several key projects are progressing. A notable development occurred on November 4 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Road No 13 South Restoration and Rehabilitation Project. This 38-km section from Khammuan to Savannakhet province will undergo surveys, feasibility studies, and engineering designs to accommodate a load capacity of 11 tonnes per axle, enhancing transportation for both commercial and public use. The aim is to improve durability, ensure safe travel, strengthen connectivity, and stimulate local economic growth along this crucial southern corridor.

On November 11, the government finalized an agreement to construct and maintain a segment of the national road linking northern Laos' Oudomxay and Xayaboury provinces, with the objective of enhancing transport efficiency, trade, tourism, logistics, and climate-resilient infrastructure along one of northern Laos' essential regional corridors.

To improve regional connectivity, the Laos government is conducting feasibility studies for expressway projects that will connect Laos with neighboring countries.

Additionally, a long-term strategy for managing state investment budgets for disaster-related infrastructure rehabilitation was announced in October. Covering the period through 2035, this framework aims to ensure that reconstruction is efficient, disaster-resilient, and aligns with national development priorities.

Together, these initiatives showcase the government's dedication to modernizing transportation networks, enhancing economic connectivity, and establishing stronger, more resilient infrastructure throughout Laos.
