Seoul, July 27 (NationPress) A notable opposition lawmaker has appeared for questioning by a special counsel on Sunday regarding his alleged role in the party's candidate selections for significant elections in 2022 and 2024, purportedly influenced by former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his spouse.

Rep. Yoon Sang-hyun of the leading opposition People Power Party (PPP) arrived at the special counsel's office in the heart of Seoul around 9:30 a.m.

"I will cooperate with the investigation in a serious, sincere, and faithful manner," Yoon stated to a crowd of reporters before entering.

The special counsel, led by Min Joong-ki, is probing claims that the former president and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, used their influence to ensure that former lawmaker Kim Young-sun secured the ruling party's nomination during the 2022 parliamentary by-elections, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.

In a previously released phone conversation, allegedly recorded in May 2022, Yoon hinted to self-identified power broker Myung Tae-kyun that he would instruct Rep. Yoon to guarantee Kim's victory in the party nomination.

At that time, Rep. Yoon was leading the PPP nomination committee.

The special counsel conducted a raid on Rep. Yoon's office in the National Assembly and his home earlier this month to collect materials as evidence.
