South Korea: Former PPP Legislator and Political Intermediary Charged in Election Nomination Corruption Case

Changwon, Dec 3 (NationPress) Kim Young-sun, a former five-term legislator of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), has been charged by prosecutors on Tuesday, along with Myung Tae-kyun, a political intermediary central to a mounting election nomination corruption case involving the ruling party.
The Changwon District Prosecutors' Office announced that both Kim and Myung were charged and taken into custody for breaching the Political Funds Act in the previous years, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Prosecutors contend that Kim provided Myung with 80.7 million won ($57,540) between August 2022 and November 2023 through Kim's campaign finance officer, in relation to Kim's candidacy during the 2022 parliamentary bye-elections.
Authorities believe that Myung leveraged his connections with powerful individuals, including President Yoon Suk Yeol and his spouse, to demand bribes by guaranteeing nominations.
According to the Political Funds Act, it is prohibited to exchange political funds in association with endorsing specific candidates for public positions.
Recently, prosecutors conducted a raid at the headquarters of the PPP in Seoul as part of their investigation into the influence-peddling corruption case.
