Why is Lithuania closing its border with Belarus for a month?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Vilnius, Oct 29 (NationPress) The Lithuanian government has announced its decision to close the border with Belarus for a month, while permitting specific exceptions, as reported by the Baltic News Service (BNS).
The Cabinet has opted to entirely shut the Salcininkai-Benyakoni border crossing and impose restrictions on the Medininkai-Kamenny Log crossing, according to Xinhua News Agency.
This travel ban does not apply to diplomats, diplomatic mail, travelers possessing simplified transit documents, and Lithuanian citizens along with their family members returning home.
Exceptions further extend to citizens from the European Union, the European Economic Area, and NATO countries along with their families, as well as foreign nationals returning to Lithuania with legitimate residence permits or humanitarian visas.
The government has directed the State Border Guard Service (SBGS) to implement the restrictions, including for humanitarian cases.
This measure is set to last until November 30, after which the Cabinet will evaluate the situation to decide on any potential extensions.
The Salcininkai and Medininkai checkpoints have been inactive since last Sunday evening due to weather balloons that were carrying smuggled cigarettes into Lithuanian airspace. Lithuania's airports faced three closures over the weekend owing to these balloons, impacting 112 flights and more than 16,500 passengers.
