Jakarta, July 29 (NationPress) Malaysia and ASEAN have reaffirmed their unwavering dedication to unity and multilateralism as essential cornerstones for ensuring regional stability and advancement. This declaration was made during a policy address by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, coinciding with his inaugural visit.
"The commitment of ASEAN to regionalism and multilateralism serves as the foundation for our collective stability and progress. It is crucial for ASEAN to advocate for rules, particularly when others may opt for retreat," Anwar stated.
While addressing diplomats, ASEAN representatives, and officials from partner nations, Anwar emphasized that ASEAN should act as a catalyst for transformation, possessing the ability to shape global norms and regulations while remaining open, inclusive, and firmly anchored in the principles of justice, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
He cautioned that the global order is experiencing unprecedented fragmentation, characterized by intense power rivalries, geo-economic competition, and diminishing multilateralism. Anwar called for ASEAN to confront this reality with a clear purpose and vision.
In this light, Anwar urged for a more cohesive and resilient ASEAN, one that can maintain constructive dialogues with global partners while safeguarding the organization's centrality, unity, and autonomy.
"I have consistently emphasized that ASEAN's centrality, unity, and autonomy should guide our collective path forward. In a fragmented world, our centrality and unity are more significant than ever," he remarked.
Anwar's address also underscored ASEAN's proactive role in conflict resolution. Referring to the recent border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, he highlighted Malaysia's successful facilitation of talks between the two nations on Monday.
This incident reaffirmed Anwar's belief that peace is best achieved through dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to stability.
ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn welcomed Anwar's visit, calling it a “truly significant milestone” in Malaysia's fifth ASEAN Chairmanship.
"Multilateral cooperation and principled diplomacy are not only viable but essential for regional peace, stability, and prosperity," Kao mentioned, adding that Malaysia's leadership in 2025 has already achieved notable milestones, including economic initiatives and the upcoming admission of Timor-Leste as ASEAN's 11th member state.
"As ASEAN navigates a period marked by fragmentation and change, the urgency of unity has never been greater; our capacity to prosper depends on our determination to remain united," Kao concluded.
