New York, Nov 5 (NationPress) Zohair Mamdani, the revolutionary Democratic Socialist, has emerged victorious in New York City's mayoral election, leveraging the liberal city's disdain for President Donald Trump and widespread economic distress. Preliminary results revealed that Mamdani, representing the Democratic Party, secured approximately 50 percent of the 2 million votes cast, significantly ahead of former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who garnered 41 percent as an independent candidate after losing the party nomination in the June primaries.

With this victory, Mamdani becomes the first mayor of Indian heritage and the third non-White individual to hold this office in the city's history. Despite being a 34-year-old newcomer, his win on a socialist agenda presents a complex challenge for Democrats, who are still recovering from last year's presidential election loss.

While his radical stance may resonate in a liberal city where Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than two to one, it could alienate moderates in other crucial constituencies. Notably, significant figures like Senate Leader Chuck Schumer and former President Barack Obama refrained from endorsing him, with some openly opposing his candidacy.

Mamdani will face off against Trump, who strongly criticized him just before the polls, threatening to withdraw funding from the city if he won. Trump backed Cuomo over Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, who managed a mere 7 percent of the vote.

In response to the election outcomes, Trump remarked on Truth Social, stating, 'TRUMP WASN'T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,' as per poll analysts.

Cuomo, who conceded defeat, congratulated Mamdani, expressing hopes for his success for the benefit of the 'greatest city in the world.' When his supporters booed, he attempted to calm them, declaring, 'That is not us,' marking a departure from the harsh rhetoric exchanged during the campaign.

Mamdani, born to a Shia Muslim Ugandan academic, Mahmood Mamdani, and filmmaker Mira Nair, who hails from a Hindu family in India, mobilized a youthful base energized by recent anti-Israel protests. His campaign expanded beyond a young, affluent demographic to include working-class and older voters.

He proposed a socialist agenda to address the high cost of living, promising free bus services, a rent freeze on certain housing, city-operated shops, new housing developments, and increased taxes on the wealthy.

Despite his inexperience, having spent only four years as a state assemblyman and a brief stint as an activist, Mamdani's campaign was marked by controversy. His affiliation with Khalistan supporters and remarks around Palestine have drawn criticism, with some labeling them as bordering on anti-Semitic. His contentious assertions included threats to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and boycott Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Amid rising fears of anti-Semitism and attacks on Hindu temples, Mamdani's statements have raised alarms. His leftist rhetoric suggests an inclination toward seizing the means of production. Trump's threats and endorsement of Cuomo became tools for Mamdani, rallying voters frustrated with Trump.

As tensions rise between Mamdani and Trump, who has historically taken a hardline stance against Democrat-led cities, the future remains uncertain. Trump has typically adopted a lenient approach to New York due to agreements with Mayor Adams. However, many of Mamdani's ambitious promises may prove unfeasible without state cooperation and additional funding.

Nonetheless, Mamdani may use his challenges as a scapegoat for any shortcomings in his administration. His previous campaign against police funding will soon confront a populace wary of crime. Meanwhile, Cuomo's political career may be at risk, being the son of a former governor and having served in Obama's cabinet, after resigning due to allegations of sexual harassment.
