Man Arrested for Carrying Firearm in Luggage at Sydney Airport

Sydney, Jan 7 (NationPress) A man has been arrested by authorities after a firearm was reportedly discovered in his luggage at Sydney Airport, according to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) on Tuesday.
Authorities were alerted to examine the luggage of the 39-year-old individual following a security worker's detection of suspicious items during an X-ray scan on December 28, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Upon inspection, AFP officers uncovered components of a disassembled shotgun along with ammunition, as stated in a police announcement.
The individual was prevented from boarding a flight to Lebanon and was interrogated regarding the firearm, which the AFP indicated was not registered in his name.
Charges have been filed against him for one count of trafficking prohibited firearms or firearm components out of Australia.
If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Dom Stephenson mentioned that the man initially claimed the weapon was a drenching gun intended for delivering liquid medications to livestock.
However, the AFP later determined that the weapon was a shotgun dismantled into two parts, a serious weapon capable of inflicting substantial harm.
He commended the alertness and prompt actions of the security personnel and AFP agents in ensuring the safety of the traveling public.
In an unrelated incident in South Australia, a man who allegedly threatened police with a knife has died after being shot by officers.
South Australia Police reported that the 40-year-old individual was shot at a residence during an incident early Tuesday morning.
The man received treatment at the scene from ambulance paramedics before being taken to the hospital where he subsequently passed away.
