Mexico City, Feb 10 (NationPress) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed that her administration will persist in providing humanitarian assistance to Cuba, notwithstanding the US sanctions aimed at nations engaging in trade or supplying oil to the Caribbean island. "We will extend more support. The Mexican populace is consistently supportive. The current plight of the Cuban people due to US-imposed sanctions cannot be overlooked," Sheinbaum stated during her daily press briefing, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
The president urged the United States and the global community to acknowledge the unjust nature of these sanctions affecting the Cuban citizens.
Recently, Mexico dispatched two naval vessels carrying 814 tonnes of food supplies to Cuba.
On Friday, while speaking from Michoacan, Sheinbaum indicated that the delivery of aid was imminent.
She also mentioned her commitment to continue diplomatic negotiations with the US to restore Cuba’s access to oil, a crucial resource for the country’s electrical grid.
However, Sheinbaum recognized that the US has threatened to impose tariffs on any nation attempting to bypass its energy blockade. "We certainly want to avoid sanctions against Mexico," she conveyed to the media.
These comments followed an executive order from Trump last week, which classified Cuba’s communist regime as an unusual and extraordinary threat to the US, necessitating a national emergency declaration.
