The Royal Order of the Polar Star — Commander Grand Cross is the highest recognition Sweden can bestow upon a foreign head of government, according to the Swedish Prime Minister's office.

The Order of the Polar Star was instituted in 1748 and is awarded to individuals for personal endeavours in service of Sweden or Swedish interests.

Ahead of the ceremony, Prime Ministers Modi and Kristersson exchanged special gifts commemorating Rabindranath Tagore, reflecting what the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described as the 'enduring civilisational and intellectual ties between India and Sweden.' The gesture carried deliberate symbolic weight, connecting two democracies through shared cultural heritage.

Notably, Swedish Gripen fighter jets escorted Prime Minister Modi's aircraft as it entered Swedish airspace — a rare military honour extended to visiting heads of government.

What the Visit Covers

Sweden is the third leg of Prime Minister Modi's ongoing five-nation tour. The two leaders are expected to review the full spectrum of bilateral relations and identify new avenues to strengthen trade and economic cooperation, according to the MEA. A major highlight is their joint participation at the European Round Table for Industry, a prominent pan-European business platform, alongside Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

This is Modi's second visit to Sweden; he had previously travelled to Stockholm in 2018 for the first-ever India-Nordic Summit. The current visit to Gothenburg follows the conclusion of his two-day official visit to the Netherlands on Saturday, at the invitation of Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten.
