Rabat, Oct 2 (NationPress) Over 400 individuals have been apprehended and nearly 300 have suffered injuries amidst ongoing protests throughout Morocco advocating for reforms in the public health and education sectors, as confirmed by the nation's Interior Ministry.
The demonstrations, which lacked official authorization, have continued for their fifth consecutive day as of Wednesday (local time), attracting substantial crowds in various cities.
Organized by GenZ 212, a newly established online collective primarily utilizing Discord, as reported by local media.
Protesters have voiced their discontent over the significant funds allocated for Morocco's preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, while schools and hospitals grapple with funding deficiencies and deteriorating infrastructure.
Interior Ministry spokesman Rachid El Khalfi stated that the situation escalated into violence in several cities, including Oujda and Inzegane.
He reported that demonstrators clashed with security forces, throwing stones, Molotov cocktails, and even utilizing knives.
El Khalfi confirmed the detention of 409 individuals.
Additionally, 263 police officers were injured, along with 23 protesters, one of whom was hospitalized in Oujda.
The clashes resulted in considerable damage, with over 140 police vehicles and 20 private cars set on fire.
Videos circulated on social media depicted hooded protesters throwing stones at police, igniting trash bins, and burning areas adjacent to a shopping center.
On Tuesday, prosecutors announced that 37 individuals, including three currently in custody, will face trial in connection with the unrest.
