8 killed, 23 injured as pickup van hits truck in MP's Bhind district
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Eight labourers were killed and 23 others injured after a speeding pickup van collided head-on with an oncoming truck in Madhya Pradesh's Bhind district in the early hours of Tuesday, 18 August. The crash occurred around midnight near Chhimka village under the Gohad area on National Highway-719, police confirmed.
How the Accident Unfolded
The pickup van was carrying 29 labourers who were returning to their home villages in Lakhimpur Kheri district, Uttar Pradesh, after completing paddy transplantation work in the Gwalior region. According to Gohad Chauraha police station in-charge Ramnaresh Yadav, the vehicle was travelling at an estimated 80–90 kmph when cattle suddenly appeared on the highway.
'Some cows were sitting on the highway and the driver tried to avoid them after they suddenly came in front of the vehicle. The pickup swerved and collided head-on with the oncoming truck,' Yadav said.
The impact was severe enough to badly mangle the pickup van, trapping several occupants inside. Police personnel and local residents worked together to extricate those trapped and shift the injured to nearby hospitals.
Casualties and Identification
Of the eight fatalities, five bodies have been kept at Gohad and three at Gwalior, while the process of identifying the deceased was still underway as of Tuesday, according to police. All labourers had travelled to the Gwalior region from different villages, primarily for seasonal paddy transplantation work.
Cattle on Highway — A Key Factor
Yadav noted that the presence of stray cattle on the highway was emerging as a central factor in the crash, compounded by the van's high speed during night hours. The issue of unattended livestock on national highways has been a recurring safety concern across central India, with multiple fatal accidents linked to sudden animal crossings in low-visibility conditions.
Notably, this incident follows a broader pattern of highway fatalities involving overcrowded vehicles carrying migrant labourers — a vulnerability that safety advocates have repeatedly flagged without sustained policy response.
Aftermath and Investigation
Traffic movement on NH-719 was disrupted before being restored after the damaged vehicles were removed from the road. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Further details, including the full identities of the deceased, were awaited as of the time of reporting.
Authorities are expected to examine both the vehicle's speed and the road's cattle-management infrastructure as the probe progresses.
