Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita held a series of high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 55th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders' Meeting in Koror, Palau on 2 September, engaging leaders from Palau, Tonga, the Marshall Islands, and Australia to advance India's partnerships across the Indo-Pacific. The engagements signal New Delhi's sustained diplomatic push into the Pacific, a region that has grown strategically significant amid intensifying great-power competition.

India-Palau Bilateral Meeting

Margherita called on Palau's President Surangel Whipps Jr., with discussions centred on ongoing development cooperation initiatives and coordination in multilateral fora. The minister reaffirmed New Delhi's commitment to deepening the bilateral partnership, congratulating Palau on its hosting of the PIF Summit.

In a post on X, Margherita said: 'Honoured to meet H.E. Mr Surangel Whipps Jr., President of Palau, on the sidelines of the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders' Meeting in Koror. Congratulated him on Palau's excellent hosting of the PIF Summit. Discussed ongoing and new development cooperation initiatives, our bilateral partnership, and cooperation in multilateral fora. Reaffirmed India's commitment to further deepening and strengthening our close and enduring partnership with Palau.'

Strengthening the India-Tonga Partnership

Margherita also met Tonga's Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua, with both sides exploring avenues to deepen the India-Tonga relationship. The meeting was attended by the Consul of India to Tonga, Madam Fakafanua, and Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala, Tonga's Minister of His Majesty's Armed Forces and His Majesty's Diplomatic Services.

The minister underscored the importance India places on its friendship with Tonga and their shared vision for a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific. On X, Margherita described it as 'a warm exchange on strengthening the India-Tonga partnership,' adding that 'India deeply values its friendship with Tonga and our shared commitment to the wider Indo-Pacific.'

Marshall Islands and Australia Engagements

On Tuesday, Margherita met Kalani Kaneko, Foreign Minister of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), in Palau, with both sides exchanging views on issues of shared interest and India's development cooperation with the Pacific nation. The minister described the exchange as 'productive.'

Margherita also held talks with Chris Bowen, Australia's Minister for Climate Change and Energy, noting that the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership 'continues to scale new heights.' The meeting reflects the growing breadth of the bilateral relationship, which now spans energy transition, trade, and regional security.

India's Broader Pacific Engagement

India's participation in the 55th PIF Leaders' Meeting is consistent with its Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) framework, launched in 2014, which has steadily expanded development partnerships with small island states. The flurry of bilateral meetings in Koror suggests New Delhi is using the PIF platform to strengthen ties at a time when Pacific nations are navigating competing geopolitical overtures. All eyes will be on whether these discussions translate into concrete project announcements in the months ahead.
