Dar Es Salaam, Nov 1 (NationPress) Tanzania's Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi was officially sworn in on Saturday for another five-year term after securing a remarkable 74.8 percent of the votes in Wednesday's general election.
The ceremony took place at the New Amaan Complex Stadium, where the oath of office was administered by Zanzibar Chief Justice Khamis Ramadhani Abdalla Shaaban. This significant event was attended by high-ranking government officials, including Tanzania's Vice President Philip Mpango, diplomats, and a crowd of tens of thousands of enthusiastic Zanzibaris.
Following the oath, Mwinyi conducted an inspection of a guard of honor provided by the armed forces, as reported by Xinhua news agency. In a speech delivered on Thursday night, after the Zanzibar Electoral Commission announced his victory under the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, Mwinyi emphasized his commitment to prioritize national interests in his upcoming administration.
As the candidate for the ruling party, Mwinyi triumphed over 10 rivals from opposition parties, with a voter turnout exceeding 88 percent across the semi-autonomous islands.
With his wife, Mariam Mwinyi, by his side, he expressed gratitude to the voters for their trust and pledged to enhance good governance, foster economic development, and promote social progress.
He also called upon the 10 opposition presidential candidates to put aside their differences and collaborate in safeguarding the nation's interests. “Let us forget the past and open a new chapter of rebuilding the archipelago,” Mwinyi stated.
First elected in 2020, Mwinyi will now lead the Zanzibar Revolutionary Government for another five years.
Previously, Mwinyi held various ministerial roles in the Tanzanian Government since 2000. Born in Zanzibar, he earned a degree in Medicine in Turkey from the University of Marmara in Istanbul, followed by specialization in Internal Medicine in the UK at King's College in London.
Before entering politics, he worked as a medical practitioner at Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton, UK, Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania, and Hubert Kairuki Memorial Hospital in Dar es Salaam. He also served as a senior lecturer at Hubert Kairuki Memorial University Medical School. Mwinyi was the Minister of Defence and National Service for a decade before his presidential election in 2020.
