Are NATO's Arctic Operations a Security Challenge for Russia?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Moscow, Dec 6 (NationPress) Russia is implementing all essential measures to safeguard its national security as the military activities and presence of NATO member nations in the Arctic region escalate, according to a Russian diplomat on Saturday.
As reported by RIA Novosti, Nikolai Korchunov, the Russian Ambassador to Norway, stated that the recent military preparations by Norway, the United Kingdom, and other NATO nations along the alliance's northern edge present direct security threats to Russia, destabilize the Arctic area, and heighten the possibility of perilous incidents.
"The increased militarization of Norway's northern territories and the internationalization of military operations in the Arctic will not enhance security; rather, it will exacerbate military-political tensions and escalation," Korchunov asserted.
He emphasized that these negative developments cause legitimate concerns, prompting Russia to undertake all necessary actions to protect its security, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
On Thursday, Britain and Norway formalized a new defense cooperation agreement. This agreement includes joint maritime patrols in the waters between Greenland, Iceland, the United Kingdom, and Norway, aimed at monitoring the movements of Russian Navy submarines. Additionally, it provides for an increase in the number and duration of British Royal Marines deployments on Norwegian soil and anticipates the potential establishment of supportive military infrastructure in Norway's northern regions.
In the meantime, Russian forces executed a significant strike on Ukraine's military-industrial complex, energy facilities, and port infrastructure, according to the Russian defense ministry on Saturday.
This strike was a reaction to Ukraine's overnight assaults on Russian civilian targets, the ministry stated, highlighting that the operation involved long-range, high-precision air and ground-based weaponry, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and long-range unmanned aerial vehicles.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported earlier that rescue efforts were ongoing in various regions following Russia's assaults.
Zelensky noted that Russia unleashed over 650 drones and 51 missiles targeting several regions, resulting in injuries, with energy facilities being the primary targets.
