Kathmandu, July 15 (NationPress) Nepal's Federal Affairs and General Administration Minister Rajkumar Gupta has resigned following allegations stemming from an audio recording that purportedly tied him to a cash-for-postings scheme, leading to demands for an inquiry into the allegations.
Amid increasing scrutiny over a leaked audio clip suggesting his involvement in a Rs 7.8 million bribery scandal related to political appointments and the reassignment of a government official in Kaski district, Gupta presented his resignation on Tuesday.
In a Facebook update, Gupta acknowledged that he had become a victim of technological misuse and has submitted his resignation to Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli.
“Sometimes, even poison one has never consumed can harm the person,” he expressed on his social media account.
Nepal's prominent daily, Kathmandu Post, reported that Gupta has called for a thorough investigation into the issue while promising to keep serving his party and the public with “renewed dedication.”
The report indicated that the minister arrived at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar, but was unable to hand over his resignation directly as the Prime Minister was engaged in a meeting.
“The minister has left a letter at the secretariat and departed without meeting the Prime Minister, who is in a senate meeting at Kathmandu University,” said Ramsharan Bajagain, an official at the Secretariat.
Another official suggested that Gupta’s resignation could have been prompted by a directive from Oli, who reportedly gave him 24 hours to resign.
The scandal involving the leaked audio, which allegedly captured Gupta negotiating a ‘bribe’ for a civil servant's transfer while arranging a political appointment in Kaski, has ignited significant political backlash. Interestingly, this issue was not addressed during the Cabinet meeting that Gupta attended despite rising calls for his ousting.
This particular controversy has also contributed to increasing tensions within the ruling coalition.
As the coalition's stability remains uncertain following Gupta’s resignation, focus has now shifted towards PM Oli’s decision regarding a potential Cabinet reshuffle.
