New Coalition Government Takes Oath in Romania

Bucharest, Dec 24 (NationPress) Romania's new government, under the leadership of incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, has been officially sworn in after obtaining a vote of confidence from Parliament.
This pro-European coalition government, which includes the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), and the national minorities, brings an end to a month of political instability that was characterized by the annulment of Presidential election results.
President Klaus Iohannis addressed the newly sworn-in government, stating, "I urge you to achieve success for Romania and its citizens. The public is looking for solutions, stability, and a government that steadfastly upholds Romania's pro-European direction."
Iohannis pointed out two significant challenges facing the new administration: the preparation of the "complex" 2025 budget and the establishment of an electoral timeline for the upcoming Presidential election.
Earlier today, the coalition cabinet received validation with 240 votes in favor and 143 against during a joint plenary session of the 450-seat bicameral legislature, exceeding the 233 votes necessary for approval.
Despite the challenges ahead, Ciolacu expressed optimism regarding his government’s capabilities. "I have faith in every member of this team. They are individuals with extensive experience and strong professional skills," remarked Ciolacu, who also serves as the leader of the PSD.
He highlighted the advantages of political stability, noting that Romania’s borrowing rates on international markets had already begun to decline following the Parliamentary vote.
Ciolacu's cabinet comprises the Prime Minister, 16 ministers, and 3 deputy prime ministers -- one from PSD without a specific portfolio and two with portfolios from PNL and UDMR.
On December 23, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis officially appointed Marcel Ciolacu, the leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), to head the new government.
On December 20, Romania's newly elected Parliament convened following the December 1 elections.
Ciolacu remained as Prime Minister until the elections concluded and a new parliamentary majority was established, stating he would not seek any position in future PSD leadership elections.
Additionally, on August 24, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu was re-elected as the chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and confirmed as the party's candidate for the forthcoming Presidential elections.
