Johannesburg, Dec 21 (NationPress) Tragically, at least nine individuals lost their lives, and numerous others were injured when armed perpetrators opened fire indiscriminately in the West Rand area of South Africa, as reported by local media on Sunday, referencing police officials.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the shooting occurred at the KwaNoxolo Tavern located in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal in West Rand, according to Times LIVE.
Mathe explained that beyond those specifically targeted at the tavern, many victims were shot randomly while walking on the street by unknown assailants.
This tragic incident unfolded in a township situated near Johannesburg, the largest city and primary economic hub of South Africa.
Gauteng Acting Police Commissioner Fred Kekana stated that a comprehensive investigation has been initiated.
"We are in the process of gathering statements. Our national crime and management team is currently on-site," Kekana informed local media.
He noted that multiple specialized units had been dispatched to the location.
"The provincial crime scene management team has arrived, alongside personnel from the local criminal record center, our serious crime investigation team, crime intelligence, and the provincial crime detective team," he added.
As of now, police have not determined the motive behind the shooting, and no arrests have been made.
This incident is the latest in a series of mass shootings that have plagued the crime-ridden nation in recent years.
Notably, this represents the second mass shooting reported in South Africa this month.
On December 6, gunmen attacked a hostel in Pretoria, the capital, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals, including a three-year-old child.
This earlier incident occurred at a site purportedly operating as an illegal alcohol outlet.
Brigadier Athlenda Mathe previously stated that at least three unidentified gunmen indiscriminately fired upon a group of patrons.
