New Delhi, Dec 12 (NationPress) In an effort to extend humanitarian aid to those in Sri Lanka suffering from the catastrophic effects of Cyclone Ditwah, the Indian Army has initiated Operation Sagar Bandhu. An Engineer Task Force was swiftly airlifted and deployed to deliver essential engineering assistance.

The task force, consisting of 48 skilled personnel, focuses on reinstating crucial communication routes, particularly through the repair and reconstruction of impaired roads and bridges.

This team is made up of expert bridge builders, surveyors, and water specialists, alongside individuals skilled in using heavy machinery, drones, and unmanned systems, which ensures the provision of accurate and efficient engineering support.

Currently, the Engineer Task Force is equipped with four sets of Bailey bridges, airlifted by C-17 aircraft from the Indian Air Force, aimed at restoring disrupted connectivity.

Moreover, the team is furnished with pneumatic boats, outboard motors, HESCO bags, and cutting-edge equipment such as high-capacity drones and remotely operated boats.

Fully prepared and operational, the task force can undertake a diverse array of engineering tasks, which include critical rescue missions, relief operations, and the construction of necessary infrastructure like shelters, roads, and bridges.

In response to the needs expressed by Sri Lankan authorities, the Engineer Task Force, in close collaboration with Sri Lanka Army officers and the Sri Lankan Road Development Authority, has conducted assessments of several bridge sites that urgently require restoration.

Due to the time-sensitive nature of this situation, work has commenced at the Kilinochchi Bridge site, where a modular Bailey bridge will be deployed to restore connectivity based on specific site conditions.

Previously, a contingent from the Indian Army set up and operated a fully functional field hospital in one of the regions hardest hit by severe floods, providing urgent medical assistance to thousands of affected individuals.
