Seoul, July 7 (NationPress) The turmoil within the South Korean opposition party, People Power Party (PPP), appears to be escalating as the leader of the reform committee unexpectedly stepped down. This decision comes amid tensions with the party leadership regarding a personnel reshuffle.
The PPP has faced significant instability since the removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol due to a failed martial law attempt and a loss in last month's presidential election.
Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo, a prominent software entrepreneur who supported Yoon's impeachment, was appointed to lead the reform committee just five days prior. However, he has announced his resignation and plans to seek the party's leadership at the upcoming national convention, set for August.
"I cannot accept an innovation committee that was formed without consensus," Ahn remarked to journalists.
"I took on the role of committee chair out of a deep concern for the party, but encountered significant obstacles even before initiating reform," he added.
Ahn expressed frustration at the PPP's emergency leadership committee for ignoring his requests for a personnel overhaul.
He also criticized the interim leadership for appointing six members to the innovation committee earlier, asserting he had not agreed to the selection, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Initially, the PPP's interim leadership had planned to postpone the approval of the innovation committee members, given that the final list was not completed. However, they decided to approve and announce six members before the finalization.
Rep. Song Eon-seog, the floor leader of the PPP, expressed his confusion regarding Ahn's decision.
Song contested Ahn's assertion about the dispute over personnel changes, stating that the party leadership could heed the innovation committee's recommendations.
