Islamabad, Sep 1 (NationPress) - Pakistan has put a hold on mail delivery to the United States due to the new taxes and duties enforced by the Donald Trump administration, as reported by local media on Monday. The Pakistan Post has ceased delivering pre-booked mail to the US, fearing that it may be returned under the new regulations established by Washington.
The US government has annulled the previous duty-free allowance through an executive order issued on July 25. This recent action by the Trump administration has drastically affected postal services to the US, as all forms of mail delivery will now incur taxes according to the new system, as highlighted by Pakistan's leading daily Dawn.
Several other nations, such as India, Australia, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Germany, Italy, and Denmark, have also declared a suspension of goods delivery to the United States.
On August 26, Australia Post announced that it would "temporarily partially suspend postal services to the United States (US) and Puerto Rico, effective 26 August 2025, until further notice." The agency indicated that this decision was driven by "recent significant changes the US Government has made to customs and import tariff rules for parcels sent to the US."
These changes include the elimination of the De Minimis exemption for inbound goods valued under USD 800 and a requirement for tariffs to be prepaid before items arrive in the US.
This means that Australian businesses are unable to send products to American customers via Australia Post. Previously, parcels valued below $800 (approximately AUD 1,230) could enter the US without tax, a loophole frequently utilized by Australian retailers selling internationally, according to local media reports.
In a related move, Swiss Post has declared it will no longer accept postal shipments destined for the United States, except for urgent express mail such as official documents and certificates. The agency stated that it would temporarily stop parcel deliveries due to new US customs regulations that hinder the standard shipping process. This decision resembles those made by other European postal services.
Recently, India also confirmed that it will halt most parcel shipments to the US starting August 25. The Department of Posts (DoP) has ceased all types of postal articles, including letters, documents, and gifts valued up to USD 100, to the United States. In its prior notification, DoP indicated a temporary suspension of all types of postal articles, except letters and gift items valued up to USD 100.
“Due to the inability of carriers to transport US-bound mail and unclear regulatory mechanisms, the competent authority has decided to completely suspend all categories of mail to the USA, including letters/documents and gifts valued up to USD 100,” stated the Department.
France's La Poste expressed that the sudden policy change left them with no time to adjust their digital systems to comply with the new customs requirements.
