Peace Summit for Eastern DRC Conflicts Cancelled, Reports DRC Presidency

Kinshasa, Dec 15 (NationPress) A peace summit that was supposed to take place on Sunday to tackle conflicts in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been cancelled, as reported by the DRC presidential office.

Angolan President Joao Lourenco was to host DRC President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame in an effort to alleviate tensions affecting the eastern DRC, according to Xinhua news agency.

As per Kinshasa's announcement, the Rwandan delegation declined to attend the meeting, resulting in its cancellation. Tshisekedi arrived in Luanda early Sunday for the summit and held discussions with his Angolan counterpart.

Neither Angola nor Rwanda has provided an official comment on the cancellation of the summit.

This meeting was part of the Luanda Process, a peace initiative initiated in 2022 and supported by the African Union, aimed at enhancing stabilization efforts in the region.

The eastern DRC continues to endure instability due to the M23 rebel group, which has been advancing and capturing extensive regions. The DRC government accuses Rwanda of offering military support to the M23, a claim that Kigali refutes.

While denying any connections to the M23, Rwanda has accused the DRC military of cooperating with the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, a Rwandan rebel faction whose members are associated with the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
