Manila, Aug 4 (NationPress) The President of the Philippines, Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., referred to India as a “valued friend” during his departure for a five-day State Visit to the nation.
In his statement before leaving, he highlighted that shared democratic values, maritime interests, and the pursuit of regional peace serve as the basis for “deeper, broader, and more meaningful bilateral cooperation” between the Philippines and India.
This visit marks his inaugural official journey to India since he took office in 2022.
According to Marcos, “Our bilateral relations have seen a measured and stable development that is both comprehensive in scope and multifaceted in nature,” as reported by the state-run news agency PNA.
He pointed out the extensive potential for collaboration with India that could mutually benefit our peoples, particularly in sectors such as defence, trade, health, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, tourism, and digital connectivity.
“I aim for this visit to yield tangible benefits for the Filipino populace, such as more affordable medicine and enhanced connectivity and food security,” he remarked.
Upon arriving in New Delhi, Marcos will commence his official engagements with Indian leaders and key stakeholders.
He is expected to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss enhancing cooperation in various fields, including the economy, defence, security, and political matters, along with trade, investment, and exchanges between people.
A statement from the President's office indicated that both leaders are anticipated to share insights on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
Following New Delhi, Marcos will proceed to Bengaluru to further discussions aimed at “strengthening economic ties with the business sector.”
The state visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Manila and New Delhi, symbolizing the shared commitment of both countries “to deepen cooperation and achieve common regional goals.”
India has reiterated that the Philippines is a vital partner in its Act East Policy, Vision MAHASAGAR, and Indo-Pacific strategy.
According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), “The relationship is anchored not only in strategic interests but also in deep historical and cultural ties.”
Diplomatic relations between India and the Philippines were formally established in November 1949. Since the initiation of India's Look East Policy in 1992, which evolved into the Act East Policy, bilateral relations have seen significant growth, especially through ASEAN cooperation.
President Marcos and PM Modi had a brief meeting on the sidelines of the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit in Lao PDR in October 2024, and earlier in Jakarta during the 20th ASEAN-India Summit in 2023.
