How Will PM Modi and President Milei Enhance Collaboration Across Key Sectors?

Buenos Aires, July 6 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Argentinian President Javier Milei conducted high-level discussions in Buenos Aires, reaching an agreement to strengthen collaboration across multiple vital sectors such as trade and commerce, technology, defence, space, health, and pharmaceuticals, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

During this meeting, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to President Milei for his unwavering support and solidarity with India in combating terrorism, as noted in the MEA's release.

The discussions took place at the Casa Rosada in Argentina's capital. Following the bilateral talks, MEA Secretary (East) P. Kumaran stated, "As you are aware, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on an official visit to Argentina. This is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years, marking a historic occasion. The Prime Minister commenced his day by laying a wreath at the bust of General San Martin, a celebrated freedom fighter in Argentina."

Kumaran continued, "Both leaders agreed on the importance of enhancing collaboration in critical sectors like trade, technology, defence, space, health, and pharmaceuticals. They emphasized the need to diversify and boost bilateral trade."

Moreover, the Secretary highlighted India's prowess in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, underlining its ability to produce high-quality, affordable medicines. The discussion included the potential transition of India from Annex II to Annex I of Argentina's pharmaceutical regulatory framework, which would facilitate easier access for Indian pharmaceutical products in Argentina.

Other health initiatives discussed included telemedicine, digital health solutions, and collaborative training and knowledge exchange. The leaders also explored cooperation in energy and critical minerals, with the Prime Minister stressing Argentina's potential as a reliable partner in meeting India's growing energy and industrial demands.

In his remarks, Kumaran stated, "The Prime Minister also appreciated President Milei's strong support following the recent terrorist incident in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and valued Argentina's solidarity during these trying times. This visit aims to further solidify the strategic partnership between India and Argentina, paving the way for new cooperation opportunities across various sectors."

Before the meeting concluded, President Milei hosted a lunch for Prime Minister Modi, allowing for an informal exchange on pressing issues discussed by both delegations.

Additionally, they talked about utilizing drones to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, particularly to address encroachments by fishermen in Argentina’s exclusive economic zones.

Another significant topic covered during lunch was India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system, which has significantly boosted productivity and economic formalization in India, generating valuable data for targeted government benefits.

ME Secretary (East) Kumaran added, "The Prime Minister has invited President Milei to visit India at the earliest convenience."

Further, he noted, "India excels in the pharmaceutical sector, exporting globally, with numerous Indian pharmaceutical facilities certified by the World Health Organization for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and many products having US FDA approvals, facilitating exports to the US and Europe."

On social media platform X, PM Modi remarked, "I had an excellent meeting with President Javier Milei of Argentina. We celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations and five years of our Strategic Partnership. While we have made significant strides, we believe the future holds even more promise for collaboration."

Throughout the discussions, both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening their partnership, with PM Modi emphasizing the need for diversified commercial ties and cooperation in areas such as agriculture, defence, energy, and more. The potential for growth in pharmaceuticals and sports was also highlighted.

PM Modi received a warm welcome upon arriving in Buenos Aires, marking the third stop on his five-nation tour. Upon landing at Ezeiza International Airport, he was greeted by President Milei, and the two leaders shared a heartfelt embrace, symbolizing the deepening friendship and strategic partnership between their nations.

Recognizing the importance of expanding economic engagement, both leaders identified promising opportunities in emerging sectors like pharmaceuticals and sports, emphasizing these areas as vital for mutual growth and innovation.

The discussions also highlighted a shared commitment to utilizing each country's strengths to foster inclusive development and make more significant contributions to the Global South.

Shortly after his arrival, Prime Minister Modi paid his respects at the iconic San Martin Memorial, a significant symbol of national pride, honoring General Jose de San Martin, the liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, and a tribute to Latin America's historic fight for independence. This gesture emphasized India's respect for global freedom fighters and its shared commitment to liberty and sovereignty. The meeting represented a crucial step in advancing India-Argentina relations on both strategic and personal fronts.
