Brasilia, July 8 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi was warmly received by Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at the Alvorada Palace in Brasilia on Tuesday evening, according to Indian time, marking the beginning of his State Visit to the nation after attending the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
After a spectacular ceremonial reception, featuring 114 horses accompanying PM Modi’s vehicle, military honours, and the introduction of delegates, the two leaders moved to a closed-door meeting, which will be followed by talks involving their delegations. A ceremony to sign various agreements is planned, along with statements to the media. PM Modi is also set to enjoy a State Lunch at the Alvorada Palace.
"Good morning. We are back in Brasilia. Today, I will welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a State Visit. We will sign new agreements and take a significant step in fortifying the bilateral relations between Brazil and India," the Brazilian President shared on X just before the welcome.
PM Modi has previously visited Brazil three times: first in July 2014, then in 2019 for the BRICS summit, and again in November last year for the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.
As per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), this State Visit presents a chance to evaluate the entire spectrum of the India-Brazil partnership, covering areas such as trade and investment, oil and gas, renewable energy, mining and critical minerals, defence and security, agriculture and livestock, healthcare and traditional medicine, tourism, space, science and technology, digital public infrastructure, and sports, in addition to fostering people-to-people connections. The leaders will also deliberate on global issues of mutual concern.
This visit is poised to be a pivotal moment in the India-Brazil strategic partnership, aimed at reinvigorating the alliance established in 2006.

In bilateral cooperation, both leaders are expected to endorse five priority areas for collaborative efforts over the coming decade: Defence and security; Food and nutritional security; Energy transition and climate change; Digital transformation and emerging technologies; and Industrial partnerships in strategic sectors, including the aeronautics, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, and critical minerals industries, as stated by the Brazilian President's office on Monday.
President Lula visited India in September 2023 for the G20 Summit, where he engaged with PM Modi. The 9th Meeting of the Brazil-India Joint Commission for Political, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (COMISTA), serving as the main dialogue and coordination mechanism between the two nations, occurred in August 2024 in New Delhi, under the co-chairmanship of the foreign ministers of both countries.
In 2024, the India-Brazil bilateral trade reached US$12 billion, positioning India as Brazil's 10th largest trading partner. Exports totaled US$5.26 billion, making India the 13th largest destination for Brazilian exports. Imports were valued at US$6.8 billion, establishing India as the sixth largest source of imports for Brazil.
According to Lula's office, since the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023, 72 Brazilian trade and investment missions have visited India, while approximately 40 Indian missions have journeyed to Brazil during the same period.
