Accra, July 3 (NationPress) Reaffirming India's role as a dedicated ally in Africa's development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized on Thursday that as the world's largest democracy, the nation stands as a beacon of strength, not only for the Global South but for all in these challenging times.
"A robust India will play a significant role in creating a more stable and prosperous world," PM Modi stated in a momentous address at Ghana's Parliament in Accra.
During his speech, PM Modi underscored that progress cannot be achieved without amplifying the voices of the Global South, highlighting the necessity for credible and effective reforms in global governance amid changing circumstances.
"The global order established post-World War II is rapidly evolving. Technological revolutions, the ascent of the Global South, and shifting demographics are accelerating this transformation," he remarked.
Expressing his deep honor to address the esteemed House, PM Modi noted that Ghana embodies the spirit of democracy, dignity, and resilience.
"As the representative of the world's largest democracy, I convey the goodwill and greetings of 1.4 billion Indians. Ghana is celebrated as the land of Gold, not just for its natural resources but for the warmth and strength inherent in its people," he stated.
In his address, PM Modi reflected on the shared histories of India and Ghana, both marked by the scars of colonialism.
"Yet, our spirits have consistently remained free and courageous. We draw strength and inspiration from our rich heritage, celebrating our social, cultural, and linguistic diversity. We have forged nations founded on freedom, unity, and dignity. Our relationship is boundless," he added.
The Prime Minister highlighted that for both nations, democracy transcends mere systems; it embodies essential values.
"True democracy fosters discussion and debate, uniting people while upholding dignity and human rights," he noted.
He brought attention to India's G20 presidency, where New Delhi emphasized Africa's rightful role on the global stage, culminating in the African Union's status as a permanent G20 member.
"I am pleased that Ghana, as a founding member, will host the African regional meeting for the International Solar Alliance this September. This illustrates our shared belief that the world is one family. India is currently the fastest-growing global economy, and based on stable governance, we are on track to become the third-largest economy. We contribute nearly 16 percent to global growth... We have the world's third-largest startup ecosystem, making India a hub for innovation and technology, where global companies aim to converge. We are recognized as the 'pharmacy of the world,'" PM Modi stated.
Addressing the esteemed attendees, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India's commitment to partnering with Africa in its development journey and supporting the continent's Agenda 2063, aiming for a bright and sustainable future for its citizens.
"Africa's aspirations are our priority. Our approach revolves around growing together as equals. Our development partnerships with Africa are demand-driven, focusing on building local capacities and fostering local opportunities. Our goal is not merely to invest but to empower and help create self-sustaining ecosystems. It is my privilege to further this partnership," he remarked.
Earlier that day, PM Modi received Ghana's national honor - Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana - from President John Dramani Mahama, acknowledging his distinguished statesmanship and impactful global leadership. Accepting the award on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians, PM Modi dedicated it to the aspirations of India's youth, its cultural diversity, and the historic ties between Ghana and India.
"The honor recognized my significant efforts in uplifting my nation and extending partnership to the world, including Ghana. It specifically acknowledged my distinguished leadership and substantial contributions to global development and the vital bilateral relationship between Ghana and India," a statement from Mahama's office revealed.
The award presentation occurred during a state banquet held for the visiting Prime Minister, marking the 24th international recognition bestowed upon PM Modi, emphasizing his unparalleled stature. Analysts noted that no Indian Prime Minister has had such a profound global impact as a committed statesman focused on regional peace, development, and spiritual diplomacy.
The two leaders engaged in extensive discussions, both in restricted and delegation-level formats, agreeing to elevate their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership.
They reaffirmed the warm, time-honored ties between India and Ghana, exploring avenues for expanded cooperation in vital areas such as trade and investment, agriculture, capacity building, digital technology, infrastructure, and people-to-people connections. They welcomed the increasing bilateral trade and Indian investments in Ghana, along with the strengthening defense and security partnership.
"They committed to further enhancing development cooperation, especially through India-supported infrastructure and capacity-building initiatives. India offered to share its experiences in health, pharmaceuticals, digital public infrastructure, UPI, and skill development. The Prime Minister expressed India's deep commitment to voicing the Global South's concerns and expressed gratitude to Ghana for its solidarity on this matter. He also thanked President Mahama for supporting the 15,000-strong Indian community in Ghana," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) detailed.
Prime Minister Modi extended his gratitude to President Mahama for his support following the Pahalgam terror attack. Both sides agreed to enhance their global counter-terrorism efforts, with PM Modi congratulating Ghana on its rising international profile, including its term on the UN Human Rights Council and the election of Ghana's Foreign Minister as the Commonwealth Secretary-General.
Reiterating their commitment to democratic values, South-South cooperation, and a shared vision for sustainable development and global peace, the two nations signed four MoUs: Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP); collaboration between Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Ghana Standards Authority (GSA); partnership between the Institute of Traditional & Alternative Medicine (ITAM), Ghana, and the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), India; and a Joint Commission Meeting to institutionalize high-level dialogues and regularly review bilateral cooperation mechanisms.
