Port of Spain, July 5 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a remarkable speech at the Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) Parliament on Thursday, receiving continuous applause from the esteemed MPs present. During his address to the Joint Assembly of the Parliament, PM Modi expressed his appreciation, stating that he is honored to be the first Indian Prime Minister to address the members in the iconic Red House.

In his remarks, PM Modi acknowledged the warmth shared between India and Trinidad and Tobago within their bilateral ties, addressing prominent figures such as Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, President of the Senate Wade Mark, and Speaker of the House Jagdeo Singh. The Prime Minister expressed his deep honor in standing before the elected representatives of a proud democracy and a friendly nation. He conveyed greetings to the Parliament on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians and shared warm wishes from Ghana, where he visited prior to arriving in the Caribbean.

"This historic Red House has witnessed the struggles and sacrifices of the people of Trinidad and Tobago in their quest for freedom and dignity. Over the past 60 years, it has remained resilient as you built a just, inclusive, and prosperous democracy," PM Modi remarked.

He highlighted the significance of the two remarkable women leaders elected by the people of Trinidad & Tobago, both of whom proudly identify as daughters of the Indian diaspora and embody the shared roots and aspirations between India and Trinidad & Tobago.

PM Modi emphasized the journey both nations have undertaken from colonial rule to crafting their own narratives, stating, "Today, we stand as proud democracies and pillars of strength in the global landscape. Recently, you celebrated the festival of democracy with elections, and I commend the people of this nation for their wisdom and vision for peace and prosperity. Congratulations to the newly elected members of this esteemed House."

He extended his warm congratulations to PM Persad-Bissessar for securing a second consecutive term and wished her success in leading the nation towards sustainable growth and prosperity.

Highlighting the words inscribed on the Speaker's Chair - "FROM THE PEOPLE OF INDIA TO THE PEOPLE OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO" - PM Modi expressed a profound sense of emotion, noting that the chair symbolizes the friendship and trust between the two nations. He remarked that in India, democracy is perceived not just as a political framework but as a way of life.

He acknowledged the representation of individuals whose ancestors hailed from Bihar, India, stating, "There is a natural warmth in the connection between our two countries. Indians are passionate supporters of the West Indies cricket team, cheering for them wholeheartedly, except when they face India."

PM Modi reflected on the long-standing relationship between India and Trinidad & Tobago, noting the arrival of the first Indians to the region 180 years ago after a long journey. He remarked that the cultural blend of Indian and Caribbean influences has resulted in a vibrant coexistence, with the Indian diaspora contributing to various fields, embodying the motto, "Together we aspire, together we achieve."

Earlier that day, President Christine Kangaloo honored PM Modi with the highest national award, which he graciously accepted on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians. He dedicated the honor to the enduring friendship and ancestral ties between India and Trinidad & Tobago.

PM Modi expressed delight at the significant representation of women in the Parliament, stating that respect for women is deeply ingrained in Indian culture. He quoted a holy text to emphasize the value of daughters in society.

"Women are leading India towards a modern future across various sectors, from space to sports and education to enterprise. Like you, we have a woman who rose from humble beginnings to become our President," he added, emphasizing the crucial role of women in shaping a developed India.

He highlighted India's status as the fastest-growing major economy globally, with inclusive and people-centric growth. PM Modi mentioned that the recent report from the International Labour Organization indicates that India's social security covers 950 million people, a population larger than many countries.

"Our vision for inclusive growth extends beyond our borders; we view our development as a responsibility towards others, particularly the Global South," he stated.

He reiterated India's commitment to enhancing relations with Trinidad and Tobago, encouraging trade, investment, and development partnerships. PM Modi emphasized the importance of health cooperation and welcomed Trinidad's decision to adopt the UPI digital payment system, which has revolutionized transactions in India.

"We are eager to collaborate on digital innovations and share expertise in agriculture and food processing. Our cooperation will be guided by your needs and priorities," PM Modi stated.

In discussing the synergy between the two nations, he remarked on Trinidad and Tobago's potential as a key player in the Caribbean and a bridge to Latin America. He expressed optimism about forging stronger regional connections.

PM Modi acknowledged the unprecedented scale of change in the world, highlighting the challenges of climate change, food security, and terrorism. He emphasized the need for a new global order that reflects the aspirations of the developing world.

He asserted that India will continue to advocate for the Global South and its rightful place in global decision-making, urging collaboration to achieve climate justice and mutual prosperity.
