Did PM Modi Just Conclude a Landmark Visit to Trinidad and Tobago Before Heading to Argentina?

Buenos Aires, July 5 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Friday, following the successful conclusion of his significant two-day visit to Trinidad and Tobago. This visit marked a notable enhancement of the historical, civilizational, and bilateral relations between the two nations.

In a message shared on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister's Office stated: "PM @narendramodi successfully wraps up a fruitful trip to Trinidad & Tobago and heads to Buenos Aires, Argentina."

"My heartfelt thanks to Trinidad & Tobago. The memories created here will remain etched in my mind. We have infused new energy into the India-Trinidad & Tobago friendship. I extend my gratitude to President Christine Carla Kangaloo, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, and the citizens of this incredible nation," PM Modi expressed in a post on his official X account.

He further stated, "I appreciate Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar's participation in the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' (a tree for Mother) initiative."

"Both India and Trinidad & Tobago are acutely aware of climate change's negative impacts and pledge to work towards making our planet greener and healthier," he added.

During discussions with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the leaders addressed the full spectrum of the India-Trinidad & Tobago partnership, agreeing on the need to enhance their economic collaboration, particularly in areas such as disaster management, climate change, and defense.

Earlier on Friday, PM Modi was awarded 'The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago' by President Christine Carla Kangaloo.

Continuing his journey, PM Modi will visit Argentina, the third destination on his five-nation tour, upon the invitation of President Javier Milei on July 4 and 5.

He is set to engage in bilateral discussions with President Milei to evaluate ongoing cooperation and explore avenues to strengthen the India-Argentina partnership in critical sectors such as defense, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, trade, investment, and cultural exchanges, while also reiterating a joint stance against terrorism.

This visit symbolizes a crucial diplomatic engagement between India and Argentina, being the first bilateral trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American nation since Indira Gandhi's visit in 1968.

It also precedes the upcoming BRICS Summit in Brazil, establishing Argentina as a significant stop in India's broader outreach to Latin America and the Global South.

Argentina's vast reserves of lithium, copper, and shale gas have become a focal point for India. Lithium, in particular, is vital for India's clean energy goals, used in batteries for electric vehicles and grid storage, with Argentina being part of the 'Lithium Triangle' alongside Bolivia and Chile.

Indian state-backed firm KABIL (Khanij Bidesh India Ltd) has already secured rights for lithium exploration in Argentina's Catamarca province, with further announcements anticipated during this visit.

In addition to minerals, Argentina's advancing capabilities in LNG and its untapped shale energy resources, which are the second-largest shale gas reserves globally, are garnering interest in New Delhi.

With traditional suppliers in the Gulf experiencing volatility, the Modi administration is aiming to diversify energy sources, with Argentine LNG being a key part of this strategy.

Buenos Aires has expressed interest in boosting LNG exports while attracting Indian investment in upstream sectors.

Bilateral trade between India and Argentina exceeded $5.2 billion in 2024, making India one of Argentina's top six trading partners.

While the trade relationship has historically centered around edible oils, especially soybean oil, there is increasing enthusiasm for expanding beyond agricultural commodities.

Argentina is keen to import Indian pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, and IT services, while New Delhi is advocating for access to Argentina's agricultural markets for fruits, vegetables, dairy, and grains. Both nations are expected to evaluate trade imbalances and seek ways to enhance two-way market access.

Argentina's reform-minded President Milei, who assumed office in December 2023, has demonstrated a willingness to pursue economic partnerships beyond the West.

As India aims to rejuvenate trade negotiations with MERCOSUR, Argentina's role is crucial.

The visit is also anticipated to broaden discussions on defense collaboration. Although still in preliminary stages, Argentina has shown interest in Indian-built defense systems, including the Tejas light combat aircraft. Talks may encompass joint training, co-production, and technology transfers.

Furthermore, Indian officials have confirmed that cooperation could be enhanced in digital public infrastructure and telemedicine. Argentina is reportedly eager to learn from India's experience in deploying large-scale digital governance platforms and affordable healthcare delivery systems.

Space and satellite technologies are also on the agenda. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Argentina's CONAE space agency have collaborated in the past, and both parties view this visit as an opportunity to formalize future cooperation, particularly for low-cost satellite deployment.

A key and politically significant aspect of this visit will be a shared declaration on countering terrorism. Argentina was among the first nations to denounce a recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam area, resulting in the deaths of 26 tourists.

For Argentina, which suffered two devastating terrorist attacks in the 1990s—the 1992 Israeli Embassy bombing and the 1994 AMIA Jewish Centre bombing in Buenos Aires—there exists a profound understanding of the threats terrorism poses to democratic societies.

"We comprehend India's anguish. Terrorism is intolerable in any guise," stated Argentine Ambassador to India Mariano Caucino ahead of PM Modi's visit.

"We must take action against those who harbor or support such elements."

Argentina's commitment to reforming MERCOSUR, the South American customs union, has strengthened India's pursuit of a deeper trade relationship with Latin America. While trade discussions between India and MERCOSUR have been ongoing for years, PM Modi's visit signifies renewed momentum.

"There is a shared recognition that MERCOSUR requires reform and needs to connect with the world. India can be a pivotal partner in this journey," Ambassador Caucino remarked.

During his stay in Buenos Aires, PM Modi is expected to pay homage at the statue of General Jose de San Martin, Argentina's hero of independence, and engage in ceremonial and delegation-level discussions.

President Milei will host a state luncheon in his honor.

This visit coincides with the imminent BRICS summit in Brazil, where India aims to advocate for broader engagement across the Global South.

India and Argentina upgraded their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2019. With this visit, both nations aspire to inject renewed vigor into a relationship founded on shared democratic principles, mutual economic interests, and a commitment to multipolarity in global affairs.
