Dhaka, Feb 27 (NationPress) The historic Madhur Canteen at Dhaka University has deteriorated into a chaotic political arena in Bangladesh as various student organizations engage in protests, altercations, and violence at this renowned site this week.

The Madhur Canteen was established by Madhusudan Dey, who was killed on March 25, 1971, during Operation Searchlight, a brutal military operation carried out by Pakistani forces.

However, the reputation of this historic venue, known as the birthplace of student politics in Bangladesh, has taken a significant hit since the interim government led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus assumed power after the sudden fall of the Awami League government under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.

Student factions from radical Islamist parties, which fiercely advocated for a unified Pakistan and opposed independence during the Bangladesh Liberation War, have seized control of the Madhur Canteen, thereby dishonoring the sacrifices made by the nation's freedom fighters, including martyr Madhusudan Dey.

Tensions escalated again on Wednesday at the Madhur Canteen, resulting in injuries to several students following a brawl between two groups after the formation of a new student organization, Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad (Bangladesh Democratic Students Union), initiated by former leaders of the Students Against Discrimination (SAD).

Reports indicate that at least 10 individuals were injured in this incident, which included a female student. Eight of the injured students were from private universities, while two were from Dhaka University.

Opposing groups, demanding the complete dissolution of the newly formed central committee of BGCS, have planned a 'Dhaka blockade' on February 28, coinciding with the day when members of SAD and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee intend to launch a new political party in Bangladesh, as reported by local media.

Student Against Discrimination (SAD) is the organization responsible for the widespread protests and violence across Bangladesh during July-August 2024, which culminated in the coup against former Prime Minister Hasina.

Bangladesh has seen a significant increase in confrontations among various student factions. Just last week, violent clashes at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) resulted in injuries to over 100 students.
