Dhaka, Dec 12 (NationPress) In yet another alarming incident underscoring the deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh under the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, a spokesperson for a July protest platform and a prospective independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the forthcoming February elections was shot in the head in broad daylight on a Dhaka street last Friday.

Sharif Osman Hadi, the spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha, a radical activist group, was shot in the Bijoynagar area of the capital and is currently in critical condition on life support at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, according to local media reports.

The leading Bengali daily Prothom Alo cited Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, stating that the assailants arrived on a motorcycle at 2:25 PM and opened fire on Hadi, who was traveling in a rickshaw in the Box Culvert vicinity of Bijoynagar.

Another Bengali daily, Kaler Kantho, reported a statement from Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sheikh Sajjat Ali, highlighting that a "massive operation" is underway to apprehend those responsible for Hadi's shooting.

Bangladesh has seen a disturbing uptick in violence that extends beyond just the persecution of minorities under the Yunus-led interim government.

Last month, the Awami League party accused the Yunus government of conspiring to lead the nation's populace toward an uncertain future, cautioning that a new form of "mob terrorism" has emerged as an organized "terror tactic".

Criticizing the Yunus regime, the party asserted that since the "illegal usurpers" took power, incidents of murder, rape, theft, robbery, looting, and mugging have sharply escalated across the nation.

They claimed that the Yunus-led interim government has resorted to "terrorism" as a strategy to maintain power, leaving citizens without even minimal protection for their lives or property.

When the state itself becomes the supporter of terrorism and acts with terror against its own people, the rule of law and public order characteristic of a civilized and modern state ceases to exist. This is why, under the guise of law and order, even the Chattogram Police Commissioner can nonchalantly refer to 'brush fires' (summary shootings). For a regime that lacks the people's mandate, terror and fear become the only means of survival — and that reality is becoming evident throughout society and the state,” read a statement from the Awami League.

Despite human rights organizations expressing serious concern about the rise of terrorism in the country, the government remains completely unresponsive. As early as March, a national daily reported that terrorist activities in the nation had increased by 6.16 percent. Following that trend, in October, human rights organizations again raised alarms regarding the escalation of state-sponsored and other terrorist activities,” the statement added.

The Awami League reported that extrajudicial killings, deaths in custody, and the discovery of unidentified bodies continue to rise unchecked in Bangladesh. The party alleged that its leaders and activists are being targeted in a systematic manner — murdered inside prisons, while outside, "mob terrorism" is unleashed through attacks, killings, and looting.

Point of View

I must emphasize the critical nature of this incident. It highlights a significant deterioration in public safety and governance under the current interim administration. The alarming rise in violence poses questions about the future of democracy and civil liberties in Bangladesh, making it imperative for citizens and international observers alike to remain vigilant.
