Dhaka, Dec 21 (NationPress) The law and order situation in Bangladesh has significantly deteriorated following the announcement of the national parliamentary elections scheduled for next year, raising alarms about public safety, according to local media on Sunday.
Recent days have witnessed a surge in political events, counter-rallies, clashes, arson attacks, and even killings, leading to fears that the electoral atmosphere is becoming increasingly unstable, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune.
Experts have noted that tensions related to elections are not a new phenomenon in Bangladesh. However, they have emphasized that the current circumstances are more troubling than those seen in previous elections.
In a disturbing incident, Sharif Osman Hadi, a spokesperson for the radical organization Inqilab Mancha and a prospective candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in Dhaka. He initially received treatment in Bangladesh but was later transferred to Singapore, where he succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
Following Hadi's death, protests and violent incidents erupted across Bangladesh. Properties belonging to several Awami League leaders and activists were targeted, along with media offices and cultural institutions. In addition to politically motivated violence, there has been a rise in brutal crimes, heightening public concerns.
Md Touhidul Haque, an associate professor and criminologist at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research, Dhaka University, described the worsening law and order scenario in Bangladesh as deeply troubling.
"Political differences and ideological disputes are common. However, when these conflicts are exploited to legitimize violence, arson, and murder, the stability during elections is profoundly jeopardized," he stated.
The interim administration, led by Muhammad Yunus, has been given a 24-hour ultimatum by the Mancha, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for Hadi's killing.
This ultimatum was issued following Hadi's funeral, where thousands of his supporters gathered at Dhaka's Shahbagh intersection, turning the area into a significant flashpoint, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune.
Issuing a stern warning to the interim government, a group leader stated, "If there is no action from the government regarding the arrest of Sharif Osman Hadi's killers by 5:15 pm on Sunday, we will organize another sit-in protest at Shahbagh."
The group has also requested that the renowned Shahbagh intersection be renamed 'Hadi Chottor'.
