Has South Korea's PPP Expelled Ex-Leader Han Dong-hoon Due to Family Posts?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Jan 29 (NationPress) The main opposition party in South Korea, People Power Party (PPP), announced on Thursday the expulsion of its former leader Han Dong-hoon. This decision follows the posting of defamatory comments by Han's family about former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his spouse on a party bulletin board.
The party's highest council made this determination approximately two weeks after its ethics committee voted to remove Han, citing his family's actions as detrimental to the party's reputation.
Han's relatives are accused of sharing derogatory remarks regarding Yoon, who faced removal from office after a failed martial law declaration in December 2024, along with his wife, Kim Keon Hee, on the PPP's official site.
Once viewed as a close ally of the ousted president, Han endorsed Yoon's impeachment following the brief martial law declaration and subsequently resigned as party leader.
Despite apologizing for the fallout from the posts, Han remains resolute, labeling the ethics committee's expulsion decision as a case of manipulation and political retaliation.
This situation highlights ongoing internal conflicts within the conservative party as it gears up for the local elections in June. Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok is striving to garner support from conservative voters to rebrand the party and improve its image, which has been marred by Yoon's martial law attempt, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.
Jang led the supreme council meeting, marking his first since completing an eight-day hunger strike. He initiated the hunger strike to demand a special counsel investigation into allegations involving the Unification Church and bribery accusations linked to nominations from the ruling party.
Han Dong-hoon is a prominent South Korean politician and prosecutor who led the People Power Party from July to December 2024 and served as the 69th Minister of Justice from May 2022 to December 2023 under Yoon Suk Yeol. Before entering politics, Han was a key anti-corruption prosecutor alongside Yoon, contributing to the convictions of former presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak, as well as Samsung executive Lee Jae-yong and family members of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk. He was a principal deputy during Yoon's tenure in senior roles at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office of Korea.
