Seoul, March 3 (NationPress) Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye urged on Monday for the ruling People Power Party (PPP) to remain cohesive and meet its obligations despite the challenges posed by the Opposition-led political scene.

Park delivered these comments during a gathering with the PPP leadership at her residence in Daegu, expressing her deep concern regarding the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, as reported by party officials.

The visit by the top members of the PPP, including Kwon Young-se, head of the party's emergency steering committee, and floor leader Kweon Seong-dong, occurred ahead of the Constitutional Court's anticipated final ruling on Yoon's impeachment related to his attempt at martial law on December 3.

If the ruling is in favor of impeachment, Yoon will be ousted from office, prompting a snap presidential election within 60 days.

Rep. Shin Dong-uk, the party's spokesperson, quoted Park as saying, "I feel heavy-hearted about President Yoon facing this situation while being in custody."

She expressed her desire for the ruling party to unite for the country’s future and stressed that the ruling party must take full responsibility for the public until the very end.

Shin also mentioned that she noted the potential for numerous challenging confrontations against the Opposition, emphasizing that as the ruling party, they must honor their duties.

Regarding Yoon's impeachment trial, Park conveyed worries about a deepening national divide that could intensify tensions, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

Park cautioned against "excessive personal beliefs leading to confrontations," urging party leaders and lawmakers not to place their own convictions above the party, as this would not aid in overcoming the crisis, according to Shin.

"Unity is essential," Shin quoted her.

Park, who was inaugurated as President in 2013, was impeached and dismissed from office in March 2017 after the top court upheld her impeachment linked to an influence-peddling scandal involving her close associate, Choi Soon-sil.
