Seoul, March 3 (NationPress) The leadership of South Korea's ruling People Power Party (PPP) is scheduled to make a courtesy visit to former President Park Geun-hye on Monday, according to party officials, in anticipation of the Constitutional Court's decision regarding President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment.

The senior members of the PPP, led by Kwon Young-se, head of the party's emergency steering committee, along with floor leader Kweon Seong-dong, will head to the southeastern city of Daegu to meet Park at her residence later today, as per party officials.

This visit occurs just before the Constitutional Court is expected to announce its final decision concerning Yoon's impeachment related to his attempt to impose martial law on December 3. Should the ruling be upheld, Yoon will be ousted from office, prompting a snap presidential election within 60 days.

Park, who assumed the presidency in 2013, was impeached and removed from her position in March 2017 after the top court confirmed her impeachment due to an influence-peddling scandal involving her close associate Choi Soon-sil.

During the meeting with Park, PPP members are anticipated to discuss the current political landscape regarding Yoon's impeachment and seek Park's insights on the party's future direction, among other matters.

Some PPP officials indicated that Park might convey a message to Yoon's supporters, encouraging unity until the impeachment ruling is announced, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

Meanwhile, the court concluded the trial following 11 sessions, which took place 73 days after the National Assembly voted to impeach Yoon over his brief declaration of martial law on December 3.

The impeachment motion alleges Yoon violated constitutional provisions and laws by declaring martial law without a national emergency and bypassing required procedures, including holding a Cabinet meeting and informing Parliament.

Yoon contends that his martial law declaration was a governance measure intended to caution the Opposition party about its repeated impeachment efforts against government officials and its attempts to reduce the government budget.

If Yoon, elected in May 2022 for a single five-year term, is officially removed from office, a snap election will follow within 60 days. Conversely, if the impeachment is dismissed, Yoon will promptly resume his duties.
