Seoul, May 13 (NationPress) The presidential hopeful of South Korea's People Power Party (PPP), Kim Moon-soo, stated on Tuesday that he is not contemplating the expulsion of the impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol from the conservative party in light of the upcoming June 3 election.
Kim has pushed back against mounting pressure from party members to dissociate with Yoon, who was ousted last month following a controversial martial law announcement on December 3 and is currently facing legal proceedings related to charges of insurrection.
"The decision of whether former President Yoon will remain in the party rests with him," Kim remarked to the press during a campaign event in the southeastern city of Daegu.
"If we conclude that former President Yoon has acted improperly and insist on his departure, then our party must also share some accountability," he further noted.
In a previous statement on Monday, Kim expressed regret over the public's distress caused by Yoon's martial law efforts, labeling it as "one of the most extreme measures" and asserting that it is not a suitable means to resolve political conflicts.
The former labor minister called on the party to move past the disputes surrounding Yoon's martial law declaration and impeachment, urging a focus on securing an electoral victory.
After Kim officially entered the PPP candidacy race on Sunday, following a period of internal disagreements regarding a unified candidate with former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, Yoon encouraged conservatives to unite behind Kim for the election, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
