President of Sao Tomean Republic Dismisses Ruling Party's Prime Minister Candidate

Sao Tome, Jan 10 (NationPress) The Independent Democratic Action Party (ADI) in Sao Tome and Principe has introduced three new candidates for the Prime Minister role after President Carlos Vila Nova dismissed the earlier nominee, Helio de Almeida.

As per updates shared on ADI's official Facebook page and the national news outlet STP-Press, all three candidates are women, including the President of the National Assembly Celmira Sacramento, Minister of Justice Ilza Amado Vaz, and Minister of Health Angela Costa.

Earlier that day, Vila Nova rejected Helio de Almeida's nomination as Prime Minister, which was suggested by ADI, urging the party to present alternative candidates to succeed Patrice Trovoada, who was dismissed earlier this week, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

STP-Press indicated that the rejection was made public during a press conference where the president elaborated that Helio de Almeida's candidacy did not resonate with his “sensibility.”

“After consultations and within the scope of my responsibilities, the candidate proposed by ADI, Helio de Almeida, does not meet my sensibility. Therefore, I request that ADI propose other names for the leadership of the next government in the coming hours, as the party has other qualified cadres,” said Vila Nova. “The requirements are mainly those that align with a specific profile. Of course, I cannot go into details here because the party is well aware of them.”

On Monday, the Sao Tomean president dissolved Trovoada's government and asked his party to suggest a new candidate for the Prime Minister and head of government within 72 hours.

Trovoada held a press conference on Tuesday at his office, labeling the president's decision as unconstitutional. ADI, of which both Vila Nova and Trovoada are members, has sought the intervention of the Constitutional Court to challenge this decision.

On Wednesday, Trovoada, in his capacity as ADI chairman, submitted a letter nominating Helio de Almeida for the Prime Minister position.
