Islamabad, Nov 18 (NationPress) Protests continue to erupt across Pakistan concerning the 27th Constitutional Amendment, as members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs) from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) organized a demonstration against the current administration in Lahore, according to reports from local media on Tuesday.

Following a requisition presented at the Punjab Assembly demanding a discussion on the 27th Amendment, PTI MPAs, spearheaded by the party’s Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, marched from the Punjab Assembly to Charing Cross, waving party flags and holding placards that read, 'We reject the 27th Constitutional Amendment.'

During the rally, Salman Akram Raja condemned the amendment, claiming it targeted the judiciary and emphasized that a subservient judiciary could not advocate for the interests of the marginalized and underprivileged, as reported by Pakistan's prominent daily, Dawn.

He reiterated that PTI is committed to advocating for the respect and integrity of the judiciary, stating, 'The PTI will not remain silent and will persist in its struggle on the streets and every forum for restoring the judiciary’s dignity, securing the release of our founder chairman Imran Khan from prison, and serving the nation.'

The Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly, Moeen Riaz Qureshi, mentioned that the march was organized under the directives of the Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP). He criticized the approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment by what he termed the 'Form-47 government.'

On November 16, activists from the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) political party and its women's wing, the Sindhiyani Tehreek (ST), also protested against the 27th Constitutional Amendment, corporate agriculture, new canals on the Indus River, honor killings, and the exploitation of resources in Sindh.

The PAT’s march commenced at Jail Road and concluded at the local press club, where various leaders addressed the crowd, according to Dawn. PAT President Vasand Thari, along with others, led the demonstration.

Vasand Thari labeled the 27th Amendment as 'more detrimental than the post-hybrid system and a direct assault on democracy.' He accused the government of distorting the Constitution, suspending fundamental rights, and subjugating the judiciary through this amendment, which supposedly allows them to exploit Sindh's resources without restraint.

The demonstrators passed resolutions asserting that the Constitution had been manipulated, fundamental rights were suspended, and courts were incapacitated, culminating in a constitutional dictatorship. The resolution condemned the lifetime immunity granted to the President and Field Marshal under the 27th Amendment, asserting that it 'elevates them above the state, Islamic law, and the 250 million citizens, effectively instituting a monarchy.'

These protests followed the signing of the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill by Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on November 13, after it was approved by both legislative houses. The bill is now officially part of the constitution.
