New York, Aug 18 (NationPress) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarked that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been a significant figure on the global scene for several years, making it essential for the US to engage in dialogue with him to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
"Putin is already on the world stage," he stated on Sunday during an interview with ABC News.
"He possesses the world’s largest tactical nuclear arsenal and the second-largest strategic nuclear arsenal. He’s already on the world stage," he emphasized.
"When I hear people argue that talking to him 'elevates' him, I find it ironic because the media has been focused on Putin consistently for the past four to five years," he remarked, as reported by Russian news agency Tass.
"Without engaging with Putin, there cannot be a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Ending this war is impossible without direct communication with him. That’s just common sense; it’s not even something I should have to explain. People can express their opinions, but the reality remains," he added.
On August 15, a meeting occurred between Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump at a military base in Alaska. The meeting lasted approximately three hours and included a one-on-one discussion in the American leader’s limousine en route to the main venue for talks, as well as a focused "three-on-three" meeting, according to Tass.
The Russian delegation included Presidential aide Yury Ushakov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, while the American side featured Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Following the discussions, Putin stated that resolving the Ukrainian conflict was the primary focus of the summit.
He also called for a new chapter in bilateral relations and proposed a return to collaboration, extending an invitation to Trump to visit Moscow.
Trump, in turn, announced some progress from the discussions but acknowledged that no agreements had been reached.
Rubio emphasized that both Putin and Zelensky must be willing to make compromises to forge a peace deal.
"A peace agreement requires concessions from both parties. Without that, it’s merely an act of surrender, and neither side is prepared to surrender. Thus, both must be willing to compromise," Rubio conveyed to ABC News.
On the subject of these concessions, Rubio mentioned that the US has urged Putin to comply, but the Trump administration believes that imposing further sanctions could bring negotiations to an abrupt halt.
