Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Moscow, Jan 22 (NationPress) Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared his intention to meet with US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and businessman Jared Kushner later this Thursday, according to local media sources.
During a session with the permanent members of the Russian Security Council, Putin indicated that he would hold discussions with the US representatives following his meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, as reported by Russia's prominent news agency Tass.
Putin confirmed that Witkoff and Kushner would be coming to Moscow to "continue the dialogue on the resolution of the Ukrainian situation." The Russian leader also expressed his intention to discuss specifics regarding Moscow's involvement in the proposed Board of Peace, which Trump has invited Putin to join.
Earlier, Witkoff had announced his plans to arrive in Moscow on Thursday. He mentioned that Kushner, who participated in a prior meeting between Putin and US officials, will accompany him for this visit.
Before their trip to Moscow, Witkoff and Kushner met with Kirill Dmitriev, special representative of the Russian President and CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, during the World Economic Forum on January 20. This private meeting lasted over two hours and was described as highly positive by Witkoff, according to Tass.
The proposed Board of Peace has been characterized by Trump as a platform that could convene leaders directly to resolve conflicts. He has argued that existing organizations have frequently been too slow or ineffective in preventing wars.
In the meantime, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asserted on Monday that if Russia genuinely seeks to end the conflict, it should prioritize diplomacy over missile strikes and other forms of aggression against Ukraine.
He shared intelligence regarding sites that Russia has surveyed in preparation for attacks, underscoring that it is evident "diplomacy is not a priority for Russia."
In his national address, Zelensky stated, "The primary target for Russia remains our energy infrastructure. Nearly 58,000 individuals are tirelessly working to repair power grids and generation facilities, and on the heating network alone. Resources from Ukrzaliznytsia and other state-owned enterprises have been mobilized. In Kyiv, where conditions are particularly challenging, an additional 50 teams from across the country have been deployed."
He continued, "There are still homes lacking heating, and necessary equipment and teams are being dispatched to each location individually. The situation remains tough in the Kyiv region, especially in the northern parts and the Boryspil district. Similarly, in border and frontline areas, repairs to networks and facilities are hampered by ongoing shelling and attacks. These areas include Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Dnipro, and Zaporizhia, which are receiving special attention. Significant efforts have also been made in Poltava and Odessa to stabilize the energy situation," he added.
Furthermore, Zelensky indicated that the Ukrainian delegation, which included the head of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, Rustem Umerov, had reported on discussions with representatives of US President Donald Trump.
"There have already been multiple rounds of negotiations—work is underway on the documents necessary to end the conflict. It is crucial that the Ukrainian team keeps the American side fully informed about the current situation in Ukraine and the ongoing Russian assaults on our energy infrastructure," he concluded.
