Reports Indicate Canadian PM Trudeau May Resign as Liberal Party Leader This Week

Toronto, Jan 6 (NationPress) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is allegedly getting ready to resign as the leader of the Liberal Party, according to a media report referencing three unnamed sources.
The Liberal caucus is scheduled to convene on Wednesday, amid increasing calls from party lawmakers for Trudeau to step down as leader.
The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, informed the Globe and Mail that while the precise timing of Trudeau's announcement is unclear, they expect it to happen before the crucial caucus meeting.
It remains uncertain whether Trudeau will also resign from his role as Prime Minister or remain in office until a new party leader is elected. His resignation as party leader would initiate a leadership contest, with the victor likely to take on the Prime Minister's responsibilities.
Trudeau has encountered significant challenges, particularly following Chrystia Freeland's unexpected resignation as Finance Minister on December 16. Freeland openly criticized Trudeau in her resignation letter, escalating the pressure on his leadership.
Furthermore, Trudeau's minority Liberal government lost a vital ally in September 2024 when Jagmeet Singh’s New Democratic Party (NDP) withdrew its backing.
Singh, in a video statement, accused the Liberals of failing the Canadian populace and stated that they no longer deserved public trust. This political setback has diminished Trudeau's administration ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Economic issues have further complicated the Liberals' situation, with recent polls indicating a notable drop in their popularity. Reports suggest that the Conservatives are likely to win decisively in the forthcoming elections. Trudeau's office has not addressed the rumors regarding his resignation nor provided comments outside regular business hours.
Trudeau initially assumed leadership of the Liberal Party in 2013, taking charge when the party was in a vulnerable state, having fallen to third place in the House of Commons.
However, his potential resignation comes at a time when the party is once again facing a leadership void, raising concerns about its readiness for the imminent election.
The exit of Trudeau could prompt calls for an expedited general election to form a government capable of tackling Canada’s current issues and preparing for future relations with the United States, especially under President-elect Donald Trump, who has frequently threatened the Canadian Prime Minister with imposing heavy tariffs.
Sources also indicated that Trudeau has considered the possibility of Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc serving as interim leader and Prime Minister. However, this option may pose challenges if LeBlanc opts to run for the leadership himself.
Trudeau's departure would signify a major shift in Canadian politics, leaving the Liberal Party without a permanent leader at a crucial moment.
