Seoul, Sep 10 (NationPress) The trial of South Korea's former First Lady Kim Keon Hee concerning corruption charges is set to officially commence later this month, according to legal sources on Wednesday. This follows her indictment by special counsel Min Joong-ki in late August.
The Seoul Central District Court has scheduled the first hearing for September 24, after Kim, who is married to former President Yoon Suk Yeol, was indicted on multiple charges including violating the Capital Markets Act, the Political Funds Act, and laws regarding the acceptance of bribes for mediation.
Specifically, she faces allegations of facilitating a stock manipulation scheme from 2009 to 2012, and receiving complimentary opinion polls alongside her husband from a self-proclaimed power broker in exchange for securing the nomination of former People Power Party Rep. Kim Young-sun for a parliamentary by-election in 2022.
Additionally, she is suspected of accepting luxurious gifts from the Unification Church via a shaman acquaintance, allegedly in return for business favors in 2022.
Kim has been in custody since a warrant for her arrest was issued on August 12.
Both Kim and her husband will make history as the first former presidential couple to face trial while in custody simultaneously, as Yoon is also incarcerated and undergoing trial for insurrection charges following his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law in December, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
On August 29, a special counsel team indicted the former First Lady for corruption and bribery, marking her as the first spouse of a former President to be tried while in custody.
