Seoul, Aug 16 (NationPress) The former first lady of South Korea, Kim Keon Hee, who is currently imprisoned, is set to face questioning by a special counsel team next week for the second time since her arrest, according to officials on Saturday.
Special counsel Min Joong-ki has reported that Kim's legal representatives confirmed her willingness to comply with the summons, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday.
Kim was arrested last Tuesday on corruption charges and underwent her first questioning just two days later. The Seoul Central District Court had issued an arrest warrant due to concerns that she might tamper with evidence.
There were uncertainties regarding Kim's availability for Monday's questioning due to health issues, as she was seeking a doctor's appointment. Initially, she intended to meet her attorneys on Monday morning before deciding on her appearance, but she reversed her decision on Saturday.
She is facing allegations of involvement in a stock price manipulation scheme linked to Deutsch Motors, a BMW dealership in South Korea, from 2009 to 2012. Additionally, she is accused of meddling in candidate nominations for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections and the 2024 general elections, as well as accepting luxury gifts from the Unification Church through a shaman in exchange for business favors.
On Thursday, Kim's questioning lasted just over two hours, during which she chose to exercise her right to remain silent, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
According to her lawyers, Kim has expressed uncertainty about her future with her husband, Yoon Seok Yeol, who is also under arrest for charges related to an unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law in December. This situation marks the first instance of a presidential couple being detained simultaneously.
Additionally, Kim Ye-seong, an associate of Kim Keon Hee, known as the family 'butler,' was arrested on embezzlement charges late Friday. This associate may be called for cross-examination on Monday.
