Seoul, Aug 14 (NationPress) Kim Keon Hee, the imprisoned former first lady of South Korea, appeared at the office of the special counsel on Thursday, marking her first questioning since her arrest earlier this week related to corruption allegations.
According to correctional authorities, Kim was transported to special counsel Min Joong-ki's office in central Seoul via a prison van after departing from the Seoul Southern Detention Centre in handcuffs.
To maintain privacy, the van utilized an underground parking route to avoid public scrutiny.
Kim, who is married to former President Yoon Suk Yeol, was taken into custody at the detention center on Wednesday following a court-issued warrant. She faces charges linked to a stock manipulation scheme, interference in candidate nominations for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections and the 2024 general elections, and accepting luxury gifts from the Unification Church through a shaman in return for business favors, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
On Thursday, special prosecutors aimed to interrogate Kim regarding the election interference case, which revolves around accusations that the former presidential couple received complimentary opinion polls from self-identified power broker Myung Tae-kyun in exchange for ensuring the nomination of former People Power Party Rep. Kim Young-sun for a parliamentary by-election later that year.
This unprecedented custody situation makes Kim and her husband, former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, the first former presidential couple to be detained simultaneously.
At the detention center, Kim underwent the same admission procedures as other detainees, including a physical examination and mug shots while wearing a khaki prison uniform.
She is anticipated to be housed in a solitary cell measuring approximately 6 to 10 square meters, furnished with amenities like a locker, a foldout table, a television, and a toilet. However, she will be sleeping on a mattress on the floor as there is no bed available.
