Tel Aviv, Oct 2 (NationPress) Five rockets were fired from the northern Gaza Strip towards Ashdod, a coastal city located in southern Israel, as reported by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The Israeli military stated that four of these rockets were intercepted successfully by their air defense systems, while one landed in an unpopulated area, resulting in no injuries.
This rocket attack occurred on Wednesday evening (local time) during the observance of Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar.
As sunset marked the beginning of the Day of Atonement, Israel came to a halt on Wednesday. Shops, eateries, cinemas, and various public spaces were closed until Thursday evening. Radio and television broadcasts ceased, public transport was suspended, and private vehicles remained mostly off the roads except for medical emergencies, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.
In a related development, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz mentioned that the military is finalizing the capture of the Netzarim Corridor, a buffer zone in central Gaza designed to separate Gaza City and northern Gaza from the rest of the territory.
Katz emphasized that this action would further tighten the blockade around Gaza City, requiring anyone leaving from the south to pass through IDF checkpoints.
He stated, “This is the final opportunity for Gaza residents wishing to head south and leave behind Hamas terrorists isolated in Gaza City as IDF operations continue at full strength.” He added, “Those who remain in Gaza will be considered terrorists and supporters of terrorism.”
Earlier that day, the IDF reported launching an extensive ground operation in Gaza City, resulting in the deaths of several militants who posed an immediate threat in northern Gaza, alongside striking various military facilities and infrastructures in the region.
Furthermore, Israeli army spokesperson Avichai Adraee shared on social media platform X that the Al-Rasheed coastal road, which serves as the primary route between southern and northern Gaza, would be closed from noon onwards, permitting movement only southward for those still in Gaza City.
According to Palestine's official news outlet WAFA, 23 Palestinians were killed due to Israeli gunfire and shelling across Gaza on Wednesday morning, while Gaza health authorities reported that Israel's military actions have led to 66,148 Palestinian deaths and 168,716 injuries since October 7, 2023.
In another incident, Israel's national emergency service Magen David Adom and the IDF confirmed that two rockets were launched from northern Gaza towards southern Israel on Wednesday but were intercepted by the Israeli air defense, with no casualties reported.
Following this rocket launch, air defense sirens were activated in three Israeli villages near the Gaza border, prompting local residents to seek shelter.
