Khartoum, Feb 18 (NationPress) The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) declared that its troops have achieved significant progress in their operations against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) across multiple fronts.
During the conflict in Bahri city, located to the north of the capital Khartoum, the SAF has successfully seized full control of the Kafouri area, which was the last bastion of the RSF within the city.
The SAF reported via its Facebook page, "The SAF special forces at Al-Markhiat Military Base are making steady progress ... in the Kafouri neighbourhood after a series of successful and intense operations that have removed the militia forces from the area."
The takeover of the Kafouri area is a significant achievement in the army's military efforts throughout the major urban centers of Khartoum, Omdurman, and Bahri.
Previously, Kafouri had been a vital stronghold for the RSF and a launch point for artillery strikes against army-held territories in Omdurman.
In another update, the SAF reported having gained control of Al-Rahad city in North Kordofan State after intense confrontations with the RSF that persisted for several days.
The SAF stated in another Facebook post on Monday, "The armed forces are continuing their victories, advancing along the Al-Rahad axis in North Kordofan and decisively defeating the militia."
Ground units of the Sudanese army are involved in fierce combat in North Kordofan, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.
Al-Rahad is the second city in the state to be reclaimed by the army, following the retrieval of Um Ruwaba, the second-largest city in the state, on January 30.
Located roughly 30 km west of El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, Al-Rahad possesses considerable strategic significance due to its location at critical road junctions. It is also an essential hub on Sudan's railway network, connecting the western part of the country to the eastern and central regions.
Since January, the RSF has been retreating from various regions in central Sudan, losing control of key areas in Gezira and Sinnar states. Furthermore, the RSF has faced losses in vital territories in Khartoum, including the Khartoum Oil Refinery situated in the Al-Jaili area, north of Bahri.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a catastrophic conflict between the SAF and RSF, resulting in over 29,680 fatalities, as estimated by international organizations.
