Sudanese Military Reclaims Strategic City of Gezira State

Khartoum, Jan 12 (NationPress) The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have successfully reclaimed Wad Madani, the capital city of Gezira State in central Sudan, from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to a statement from the SAF spokesperson.

"The command of the SAF extends heartfelt congratulations to our esteemed citizens on the entry of our forces into Wad Madani this Saturday morning, where they are currently engaged in eliminating remaining pockets of resistance from the rebels within the city," the statement elaborated on Saturday.

In a related note, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry characterized the recapture of Wad Madani as a significant triumph, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

"This victory marks the dawn of a new era, signaling the end of the turmoil that has plagued the Sudanese people for nearly two years, driven by the rebel militia," the ministry stated.

Additionally, soldiers of the Sudanese army shared video footage from inside the command headquarters of the SAF's 1st Division in Wad Madani, which had previously been under RSF control, while local activists posted videos showing jubilant citizens celebrating inside Wad Madani, cheering and waving to military units as they entered the city.

Major cities across Sudan, including Atbara, Port Sudan, Omdurman, and Kosti, saw public demonstrations in celebration of the recapture of Wad Madani.

Since the beginning of January, the SAF has initiated a significant ground operation aimed at regaining control of Wad Madani, located approximately 189 km from the nation's capital, Khartoum.

In December 2023, the RSF had taken control of Gezira State following the SAF's withdrawal from Wad Madani.

The RSF has yet to respond to the SAF's announcement regarding the city’s retaking.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating conflict between the SAF and the RSF, resulting in at least 29,683 fatalities and displacing nearly 15 million individuals, based on the latest estimates from international organizations.
