South Korea: Expanded Evacuation Orders as Firefighting Efforts Persist Against Sancheong Wildfire
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Changwon, March 22 (NationPress) Additional villages have been placed under an evacuation order on Saturday, as strong winds hindered firefighting efforts against a wildfire that erupted in the southeastern region of Sancheong, according to officials.
The local government in Sancheong alerted residents and visitors in eight neighboring towns to evacuate immediately to a secure area at 3 p.m., as reported by Yonhap news agency.
This decision followed a previous order from the county office for 213 residents in seven villages affected by the wildfire to seek safety at a nearby research center.
One resident from one of the impacted villages received hospital care after inhaling smoke; however, no additional casualties were reported.
As of 3 p.m., 65 percent of the fire had been contained, a decrease from 70 percent at 10:30 a.m., with the wildfire now affecting an area of 290 hectares.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok has instructed relevant agencies to exert maximum effort in mobilizing all available resources and personnel to extinguish the fire before sunset.
He emphasized the importance of safety for residents and firefighting teams on-site, urging that thorough preparations be in place in case the fire persists overnight.
The authorities have issued the highest level of emergency response to combat the fire, approximately three hours after it first ignited at 3:26 p.m. on Friday.
Once the fire is fully extinguished, officials plan to investigate its cause. The individual who initially reported the fire indicated that it was sparked during mowing activities.
