Dhaka, April 7 (NationPress) Heightened security measures have been implemented in the diplomatic enclave of Dhaka, especially around the US embassy, following a wave of pro-Palestine demonstrations that occurred on Monday.
For this purpose, personnel from the Border Guard Bangladesh, Armed Police Battalion, Special Branch, Criminal Investigation Department, various intelligence agencies, and the Bangladesh army have been deployed to oversee security in this highly sensitive area.
Moreover, security protocols have also been tightened at other embassies located in the Gulshan district.
The leading Bengali daily, Prothom Alo, quoted Gulshan Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police Ali Ahmed Masud, who stated that security in the diplomatic zone has been reinforced in light of protests that called for an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Numerous students from Presidency University, University of Information Technology and Sciences, and Bangladesh Navy College gathered in large numbers outside the US embassy, voicing their support for Palestine. Student leaders from various institutions had initiated a nationwide campaign for a “no work, no school” day on Monday.
In a statement, the US embassy in Dhaka issued a security alert indicating that demonstrations were anticipated throughout the day on April 7. University students planned to participate in mass demonstrations in Dhaka and other areas in response to the Gaza conflict. Due to expected increased traffic and planned protest activities near the embassy, the US Embassy restricted afternoon public services on Monday.
“US citizens should remain vigilant and understand that demonstrations meant to be peaceful can sometimes become confrontational and escalate into violence. It is advised to avoid protests and exercise caution around large gatherings. Review your personal security plans; stay aware of your surroundings, including local events; and keep an eye on local news for updates,” the statement read.
