Washington, March 14 (NationPress) The US Senate honored Indian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist Sunil Puri. Senator Dick Durbin reflected on Puri's inspiring journey, starting as a young immigrant from India with limited resources and evolving into a prominent civic leader who significantly impacted Rockford, Illinois.

Durbin shared the news of Puri’s passing on the Senate floor, labeling him a remarkable embodiment of the American dream.

“Mr. President, when I contemplate the American dream, my thoughts turn to my friend Sunil Puri,” Durbin stated.

Puri made his way to the United States from India in 1979 at just 18 years old. Durbin noted that he arrived in Rockford “with little more than hope, determination, and just $150 in his pocket.”

Throughout the next 40 years, Puri emerged as a key business figure and philanthropist in the community.

“Over the span of four decades, he evolved into one of Rockford's most influential businessmen and philanthropists,” Durbin remarked.

Durbin recounted how Puri transitioned from Mumbai to Rockford, aspiring to study at Rockford College, now known as Rockford University. During his academic journey, Puri juggled multiple jobs to support himself.

“Through perseverance, dedication, and various odd jobs, including cleaning bedpans and laying concrete, Sunil financed his education,” Durbin highlighted.

Durbin also emphasized the vital role of the local community in Puri's success during those formative years.

“The people of Rockford welcomed Sunil with open arms, and in return, he dedicated the next four decades to giving back,” he stated.

Upon earning his degree in accounting, Puri established First Rockford Group, later rebranded as First Midwest Group, a real estate development firm responsible for numerous revitalization projects in the city.

Durbin explained that this company played a pivotal role in transforming neglected properties into productive ventures.

“They have converted abandoned and forgotten buildings into bustling restaurants, offices, and warehouses,” Durbin remarked.

He added that the firm’s investments significantly contributed to economic progress and job creation throughout the region.

“First Midwest's investments in Rockford have revitalized the city, spurring economic growth and providing employment for thousands of Illinois residents,” he stated.

In addition to his business endeavors, Durbin pointed out Puri’s extensive philanthropic efforts in Rockford. Inspired by his parents' teachings, Puri often emphasized the value of giving back.

“‘Water the flowers where you smell the roses,’” Durbin quoted Puri.

Puri donated millions and dedicated significant time to various community initiatives. His charitable efforts supported major projects, including the Keeling-Puri Peace Plaza, the southeast Rockford YMCA branch, and the Salvation Army Puri Family Disaster Services Center.

Durbin also mentioned Puri’s advocacy for stronger US-India relations, noting that he was “a fervent supporter of enhanced US-Indian ties” and traveled to India with Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama to foster greater engagement between the two nations.
