Damascus, Dec 25 (NationPress) Syrian security personnel apprehended a high-ranking figure of the Islamic State (IS) organization during a security operation in the outskirts of Damascus, as reported by Syrian state media.

According to a source from the Interior Ministry, the state-run SANA news agency disclosed on Wednesday (local time) that the operation was executed in collaboration with the General Intelligence Service and a US-led international coalition. This mission aimed at an IS hideout located in the city of al-Moadamiya in Rural Damascus following extensive surveillance and intelligence efforts, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Ahmad al-Dallati, the head of internal security in the Rural Damascus province, confirmed that the operation culminated in the capture of the group's leading figure in Damascus, identified as Taha al-Zoubi, also known as Abu Omar Tabiya, alongside several of his associates.

Al-Dallati added that security forces successfully confiscated an explosive suicide vest and military-grade weaponry during the operation, characterizing the raid as a significant setback to IS networks active in and around the capital of the country.

He emphasized that Syrian authorities will persist in their efforts to track down IS remnants, warning that anyone engaged in terrorism or providing assistance to the group will face consequences.

This operation unfolds amidst intensified security measures across Syria following a wave of attacks in recent weeks targeting both security forces and civilians.

On the same day, Syrian security forces executed another operation in the coastal province of Latakia, resulting in the deaths of three members of an armed organization.

Earlier in August, troops from the US-led coalition conducted an airborne raid on a residence in the northwestern province of Idlib, eliminating a man believed to be an Islamic State commander.

Syria's state television channel al-Ikhbariya reported that coalition forces encircled the residence in the town of Atmeh before breaching it. The individual attempted to evade capture by leaping from a balcony into the garden but was shot dead. Coalition units subsequently searched the premises, seizing cell phones and electronic devices, and interrogated the landlord. The body of the deceased was later transported to Bab al-Hawa hospital, according to the report.
