Severe Snowfall Disrupts Electricity for Thousands in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Sarajevo, Dec 25 (NationPress) Intense snowfall has led to significant disruptions in electricity services in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), impacting about 127,000 metering points across seven cantons, according to the nation’s electric utility.
As per Elektroprivreda BiH, Tuzla Canton in the northeast has been particularly affected, with 70 power lines failing on Tuesday, leaving over 65,000 customers without electricity.
In central BiH, Zenica-Doboj Canton has reported 30,000 customers without power. In the northwest, Una-Sana Canton is experiencing outages for 19,000 customers, as per reports from Xinhua news agency.
Furthermore, around 7,000 customers in Central Bosnia Canton have faced disruptions. Four transformer stations in Sarajevo Canton are non-operational, and Herzegovina-Neretva Canton remains without power.
Elektroprivreda BiH has mobilized all available staff and resources to restore electricity. However, ongoing snowfall, high winds, and fallen trees are hindering recovery efforts. The company is exploring alternative solutions where feasible and urges customers to be patient during these challenging times.
Meteorologists predict heavy snowfall across a large part of the country until Thursday. Local media reports indicate that such a significant weather event has not occurred in years.
Across the Balkans, authorities have issued travel alerts as snow drifts have closed several major routes, including sections of highways in Croatia.
Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia have prohibited the movement of heavy vehicles and have imposed traffic restrictions on affected roads.
Certain areas of Bosnia have witnessed a complete stoppage of railway services due to the snow.
The state power company of Bosnia has characterized the situation as “extremely challenging” in various regions. The weight of the heavy, wet snow has caused distribution lines to collapse, making them difficult to reach because of snow drifts, according to a company statement.
